Diesel entered our family on April 27th 2008
We knew we wanted a dog for quite some time, we were just not sure about the timing. on monday april 21st, just before to shut down my computer, i had the urge to look on the Moncton SPCA site for available dogs. saw one that seem suitable for our house. i let her run through my mind for the night, she had been there for 9 months, so i thought she wouldn't be moving quickly. her name was Misty and i remember when i went to pick up our Misty, the cat, they had asked me to specify if i was after the cat or the dog... we could've had her back then. but after a night of sleep, i decided to look for her again. she was gone, just like that.
so i started looking in a wider range of pet shelters. found Lexi in Oromocto. her description was all we needed, good with everybody, great with kids, dog and cats too. so i emailed about her, filled the form. I figured that with my husband's work shift, we'd only be able to go get her on saturday at the earliest. And the lady told me to phone her on friday to make sure she was still there and she would reserve her from friday to saturday. after pondering about it and worrying that she could be gone faster then we could get there, we figured it would be easier to get her on thursday, so wendnesday, i called to inform them about our plan, they said they would reserve her, but then i called back because i had forgotten to ask about crate and collar size. that's when they informed me that a couple was undecided between her and Benny. so i had to call back later to find out that Lexi was the one they adopted. i was dissapointed and figured it would take me months to find an other one, screening description carefully for one that would work well with our family of 2 kids (3 and 5) and 2 cats.
I was very surprised when my MSN buddy Nancy told me about an add at work for a lovable dog to give away due to moving in the city. I called quickly, asked a few question that would reassure me that he'd be good with our kids and made arrangement to go get him. I was not prepared to let an other good dog slip past me. especialy that Nancy told me that usualy things that are advertised for 5 minutes are already fought over. Oddly enough, i was the only one who showed interest in 4 days, at the time we picked him up.
That evening, my mother in law offered to follow us there and bring him back to our house for us, since it could be tricky to have 2 young kids and a new dog in the same vehicle. it's a good thing they live on the way there. I supose she is right, but i still wonder if it's just an excuse because she couldn't wait to see our new dog hehe regardless, it had been a while since i seen them and the kids would have an other chance to see their grand parents too. I felt a little weird mobilizing so many peoples to get a dog and was worried what the kind family giving away their dog would think.
We left Sunday morning at 10:30 after i came back from church. we packed some food to have lunch at my in law's place. then we took the wrong road, and had to figure out how to connect to the right one from there. it extended our trip a little bit. there was some doubts at time if we were on the right track but we made it in time. at 3h00 pm as planned. We took half an hour to get to know Diesel before taking our journey back home with him. Diesel and the kids were excited and running all over the place, but i knew this was just a newness factor. Diesel was good, he didn't try to jump on us like some dog do. he only smelled our knees.
we made a stop at the Irving Big Stop on the way back to have something to eat for supper. i took Diesel out in case he wanted to pee. he pulled left and right trying to elude me into loosing grip of the leach that he already had partly chewed in my in law's vehicle. we made some knots in it and i tied the handle part to his collar as it had the longest unbroken part. I think at that point he was very confused and was hoping he could find his way back home. when i saw that he wasn't going to do anything, decided to put him back in the vehicle so we could go eat, but everybody else had gone in the store and my dear father in law didn't have the keys. i wasn't going to stay outside while everybody else ate, so i figured, hey, i have the keys to our minivan, why not put him in there. open the windows some so he wouldn't overheat and go rejoin everyone else. they were comming out of the Irving saying there was too big of a lineup so we were going to continue toward home and find some place to eat on that way. i had calculated at that time that we might make it home around 7:30 pm and if i was to feed everybody at home it could take over an other hour to cook, so we wouldn't eat till 8:30 pm? then my parents in law would have nearly an other hour to drive back home, and they have a dog at home that would have his legs crossed. Diesel seem to settle well in our minivan so we decided that we'd be ok to do the rest of the trip with Diesel with us and my in laws could go home. the trip did go well.
i took Diesel around the yard when we got home but he was still not comfortable doing anything until around 10pm.
So that was Diesel's first day with us. he slept on the blanket we brought with us for him, at the foot of our bed.
